Celebrating Utah’s Pioneer Heritage

Utahn’s should be proud in a big way for this little state we live in. Ever since its founding, Utah has been pioneering in the fields of industry, agriculture, transportation, communications, science and medicine. Since that fateful day in 1847 when Brigham Young uttered those famous words “This is the place” this little state has had a big impact on the world around it.

This impact began as it became an important stop for resupply of the 1849 California Gold Rush and the resultant move westward. As a result, Utah has become rightly known as The Crossroads of the West. This crossroads continued as the first transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. While that particular instance is famous, what many do not know is that the first transcontinental telegraph was finished in Utah in the year 1861 as well. Brigham Young was among the first to send messages along with Abraham Lincoln.

In the field of science, Utah has been a major contributor to the space program as ATK produces rocket engines and other components for NASA’s use. The Huntsman Cancer Center is world renowned for its research on cancer, and its director, owner and operator, John Huntsman Sr. is determined that it will be the place where the cure for cancer is found.

Determination is the word that could be used to describe Utah. From its beginning we have been a people determined to leave a mark on the world, a people who wish to impact their friends and neighbors in a positive way. The early pioneers were determined that they would settle this land for their use as a haven from religious persecution. Today their descendants and the transplants who have joined us since are likewise determined to advance in whatever fields they feel inclined. Utah’s economy reflects this determination. It is strong and robust, Utah’s job market is still growing.

During these uncertain times we should reflect this Pioneer Day on that spirit of determination, hard work, and providence that has helped propel Utah forward onto the world stage as a place of note. As we reflect on our heritage, let us resolve to move forward and not let fear overcome us and prevent us from moving forward in pursuing our dreams.

The Deseret News has a list of activities going on throughout the state on the 24th. We hope you have a very happy Pioneer Day from TheRedSign.net team.
